May McKernan is a Baltimore-based motion designer, educator, and musician. With 4 years of experience in media production, May has brought her rich skill set to agencies like Interface Media Group, LAI Video, and Early Light Media. From creating silky-smooth mograph explainers to spotlight video edits all the way down to award-winning animated music videos, her portfolio prioritizes emotion, passion, and the sublime outcomes of working in such an endlessly inventive medium. She has worked for clients such as SAMHSA, National Geographic, Docusign, League of Women Voters, Amazon, and Anacostia Community Museum, amongst others.
May received her BFA in Animation at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2021. Since then, her work has screened in-competition in the United States and abroad, winning the 2021 ‘Best of Baltimore’ Award at Sweaty Eyeballs International Animation Festival. In her personal practice, May interprets environmental processes like cloud formations into metaphorical lenses to liberate and interrogate identity. She has designed a variety of narratives around this approach— from centering a coming-out narrative using candle wax, to masking fiber textures onto bodies to critique capital definitions of property.
In August 2025, May departed from her role as Motion Designer at Interface Media Group (IMG) to pursue freelancing full-time. She currently lives with her partner and cats in Laurel, MD.
