May McKernan is a Baltimore-based animator, educator, and musician. Her work interprets organic processes like cloud and fire lifespans into metaphorical lenses to view the world. She has designed a variety of techniques to explore this approach— from centering a coming-out narrative around candle wax to masking fiber textures onto bodies to critique capital definitions of property.
May received her BFA in Animation at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2021. Since then, her work has screened in-competition in the United States and abroad, winning the 2021 ‘Best of Baltimore’ Award at Sweaty Eyeballs International Animation Festival. She currently works as a Motion Designer for Interface Media Group (IMG) and lives with her cat Sola.
